Thinking of starting an organic farm, or transitioning to organic farming? You’re in the right place. In this guide, we’re going to cover everything you need to know to start or transition your organic farm.
We’ve been in organic farming since the early 2000’s and consider ourselves to be well versed in the subject. There are many questions you likely have, such as the types of seed you can use to hold your certification, what certifications you’ll need, how long the process takes, marketing your transitional grain, and more.
In this guide, we’ll cover the entire process of transitioning your farm to organic, or starting your organic farm from scratch.
The process for organic transition takes a full three years. To start the process, you’ll start by hiring a certifier. Your certifer will have a list of must-do items in order to start next season out as the first year of your organic transition.
We’ll start with organic certifications, their importance, the certifiers we recommend, and a few additional questions.
There are plenty of organic certifiers throughout the United States. Here in the Midwest, a few popular ones include MOSA, OCIA, MCIA, NICS, and Oregon Tilth.
When you decide on a certifier, it’s best to work with one who has representatives in your area, as they’ll be doing on farm inspections on a yearly basis.
